Currency

Barcelona uses the Euro. While most major credit cards are accepted, purchases under 10 Euros are customarilly made with cash.

Transportation

Taxis are black and yellow and easily recognizable. When looking for a vacant cab, check to see if the green light on top is lit. Metered cabs are recommended when traveling from the airport as opposed to paying a flat rate. You'll find that cash is needed when using taxi service.

Personal Safety

Bring your street smarts. Don't carry large amounts of cash and keep your money concealed. Leave your important documents (passport, plane ticket, etc) in the ship/hotel safe. When walking along the streets, keep your purse on the inside, preferably with the shoulder strap across your chest. Be vigilant when in crowded areas. Pickpockets are notorious for frequenting Metro stations, open air terraces and lines to enter attractions. Men are advised to move their wallets to their front pockets.

Marvel at magnificent marine animals and face off with fascinating sharks that are at home in Europe's largest aquarium. Then lounge on the long bench in the form of a sea serpent that stretches across the grounds of Park Güell.

Imagine yourself as a seafaring explorer as you're driven past the Columbus Monument, the Museu Marítim and the Port Olímpic. Arrive at L'Aquarium de Barcelona for a 60-minute visit. Stroll around the aquarium and see thousands of colorful sea animals swimming in 35 elaborate tanks. After a 45-minute drive, arrive in Park Güell and marvel at a dragon fountain decorated with beautiful tiles. This whimsical park was designed by Spain's renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, an artist highly influenced by organic shapes in nature. Here, walkways are supported by twisting rock pillars that seem to be growing out of the ground like tree trunks. Traverse these paths and reach the top of Park Güell for a stunning view of Barcelona City, then relax on bench seats that trace the spine of a sea serpent. Continue the tour on board the bus with a stop at Mirador del Alcalde for more magnificent views of the city before returning to the pier.
Price: $65 (ages 10 and up)(Adult), $45 (ages 3-9)(Child)

Barcelona and Codorniu Cellars (5 - 5.5 hours)
Tour Available: May 25th Departure 9:00 a.m, Aug 19th Departure 9:00 a.m.

Board the bus for a sightseeing adventure through Barcelona, past historic sights like Montjuïc Mountain and Plaza España. Tour Codorníu's cellars and savor a taste of Catalonia's most famous sparkling wine.

Move towards Montjuïc Mountain - the mountain between the city and the sea. See the castle that used to be a watchtower at the summit. This is the highest point of the city and the place for breathtaking views. Take in more views at Mirador del Alcalde. Proceed past Olympic Ring, Poble Espanyol de Montjuïc (Spanish Village) and Congress Place. Come to the busiest intersection at Plaza España, a six-way roundabout with ornate fountains and continue to the opulent shopping center of Passeig de Gràcia. This elegant avenue traces back to Roman times when it was a path that linked to the Via Augusta. Stop for a 30-minute photo opportunity at La Sagrada Familia. The first foundation stone for this extraordinary church was put in place in 1882. About a decade later, when the original architect resigned, Gaudí took over and continued to work on the church until his death in 1926. Construction continues to this day, as La Sagrada Familia rises, little by little, to the sky.

After a 45-minute drive, which takes you past the beautiful buildings on Diagonal Avenue, arrive at the cellars of Cava Codorníu. Spain has an excellent climate for producing cava grapes, a type of white or pink sparkling wine, and is the world's largest cava producers. The word "cava" comes from the Greek work for "cave," or wine cellar, and the winemakers in the cellars at Codorníu bottled their first cava in 1872. Stroll through the history of cava and Catalan culture in the main building; then, hop aboard a train that takes you on a trip through a portion of the sprawling 18-mile long underground cellars. When you return to the tasting area, sip a glass of cava and relax before the one-hour drive back to the pier.

Tour the streets of Barcelona and delight in the visual treats of Gaudí's distinctive architecture. Sample delicious wine and authentic Spanish tapas at the Costa Gallega restaurant.

Climb aboard an air-conditioned motor coach for a 30-minute journey past Passeig de Gràcia. After a 45-minute break, start spinning again through several squares of the Old Center, called Casco Antiguo. Navigate your way past magnificent buildings and antique narrow alleys with tiny shops. Absorb the atmosphere of these ancient streets. Leave Casco Antiguo for Columbus Square, and then return to Citadel Park to see Moll de la Fusta, Passeig Marítim and the Port Olímpic. Gaudi and Barcelona (4 - 4.5 hours)
Revel in the architecture of Antoni Gaudí. Photograph his most famous unfinished achievement, La Sagrada Familia, and traverse through Park Güell before embarking on a driving tour along Passeig de Gràcia to see La Pedrera House.

Ride on the bus for a short 30-minute drive down Via Layetena and Placa Catalunya - two famous commercial streets - to arrive at La Sagrada Familia and spend an hour touring this impressive church. Gaudí abandoned all other projects at the age of 31 to devote his life to the completion of this magnificent structure. For this reason, he is now known as God's Architect. Construction began in 1882 and nearly a century and a quarter later, it is still not complete. Gaudi died in 1926, and in 1940, construction faltered due to confusion over his plans for the 18 towers representing the twelve apostles, four evangelists, the Virgin Mary and Christ. Today only eight of these proposed 18 towers are finished.

After walking around the church, enjoy a refreshment at Porxos Restaurant, located near La Sagrada Familia, and then climb aboard the bus again for a 30-minute drive to Park Güell. Fashioned after the English model of a "Garden City," this park was designed by Gaudi in the early part of the 20th century and was intended as a hillside garden suburb of Barcelona. Be welcomed by the dragon fountain at the entrance of the park. Romp through this magical place for 90 minutes. Climb to the highest point in the park for panoramic views and then rest on benches that trace the spine of a sea serpent. Return to the motor coach to continue the tour of Gaudí's work. Ride along the Passeig de Gràcia, the widest avenue in the city, to see many Modernist houses designed by Gaudí and other important architects of that movement. Stop in front of La Pedrera House, which translates as "the quarry house" because of its cliff-like walls. Afterward, arrive at the pier after a short 30-minute ride.
Price: $49 (ages 10 and up)(Adult), $39 (ages 3-9)(Child)

From the window of the bus, appreciate the panoramic vista of Barcelona's port over Montjuïc Mountain - the mountain that divides the city from the sea. Arrive at Laietana Avenue where the walking starts in the Gothic Quarters, an island city within the city surrounded by the remains of Roman walls. Steep yourself in history and Gothic architecture as you navigate the narrow streets of ancient stone. The first stop on the tour is the Cathedral complex - containing three medieval palaces - that dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries and is dedicated to Eulalia, patroness of the city, who is buried here in a crypt. After 30 minutes at the Cathedral, progress through the Plaza Nova to the Palau de la Generalitat and the Town Hall. Stop for a few minutes to listen to the history of both buildings. Hike through Ferran Street to Plaza Reial, then Las Ramblas, which brings you to Boquería Market. Relax and exchange your voucher for a drink of juice and a small treat. Shop on your own or wander around the charming La Ramblas for half an hour before rejoining the group.

Make your way down from La Ramblas to the Columbus Monument where the mimes perform for coins. Be entertained and leave with a smile on your face before you slip silently on the bus for the 15-minute ride back to the pier.

Montserrat: Half Day (5 - 5.5 hours)
Ride the Rack Railway up to the majestic Montserrat Mountain Monastery before climbing on the pink conglomerate rock and soaking up the history of this famous mountain range.

Leave the pier aboard an air-conditioned motor coach for a 40-mile drive through the countryside to the Rock Railway train station. Climb aboard the train for a 14-minute ride up the rugged Montserrat Mountain range. Revel in amazement at the formations resemblance to jagged teeth or fingers pointing to the sky. Use your imagination and create your own stories. These mysterious peaks have been featured in many legends - in the Arthurian myth, this is the location of the Holy Grail. This vista also inspired Wagner to create some of his most beautiful arias.

The mountains have a rich geological history. The base of the mountains today used to be the delta of a river that came from the Balearic continent at the end of the Mesozoic era. This river flowed into a lake in the center of what is known today as Catalonia. The river carried sediments. Once the river and then the lake dried up, these sediments were affected over millions of years by the movements of the Earth's crust, along with the changes in climate and erosion. The formations from these forces were oddly shaped and craggy channels.

Hike to the famous Monserrat Monastery that is perched on the ledge and hangs 2,400 feet above the River Llobregat. Founded as a Benedictine Abbey during the 11th century, it is now the location of the Shrine of Our Lady of Montserrat, or "La Moreneta." This small Romanesque statue depicts the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus on her lap. Made of wood, this figure has turned black as the varnish has changed over time - giving her the name, "The Black Madonna." Following a bright light and heavenly music, shepherds were led to the grotto where the statue was first discovered, or so the story goes as it was recorded in the 13th century. Trek through these cliffs on different paths from the Main Square. Explore the mountainside and absorb its fascinating history. Rest and relax at one of the snack bars or cafeterias and cash in your voucher for a refreshing drink. After two hours of traversing the trails, return to the train, which takes you back down the mountain to the motor coach for your trip back to the pier.
Price: $45 (ages 10 and up)(Adult), $35 (ages 3-9)(Child)

This small Romanesque statue depicts the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus on her lap. Made of wood, this figure has turned black as the varnish has changed over time - giving her the name, "The Black Madonna." Following a bright light and heavenly music, shepherds were led to the grotto where the statue was first discovered, or so the story goes as it was recorded in the 13th century.
