Anitigua
Antigua was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493
and named after Santa Maria de la Antigua of Seville. Nestled
in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean.
At fourteen miles long and eleven miles wide, its 108 square
miles makes it the largest in this island chain.
Modest in size, yet big on charm, Antigua originally was
settled over 200 years ago by Admiral Horatio Nelson. Originally
intended as a British fortress, the same characteristics
that made it ideal for that purpose have evolved to make
it a sought after tourist destination. Natural safe harbors,
a nearly unbroken coral reef, tropical trade winds, low humidity
and moderate temperatures combine to make Antigua a Caribbean
jewel.
Its unusual coastline creates naturally formed secluded
beaches with powdery soft sand. The coral reefs, that were
once the scourge of enemy ships, are now sought after by
scuba divers and snorkelers alike.
For visitors who prefer less “watery” pursuits,
this “gateway to the Caribbean” is rich in history.
Great care has been taken to restore the English Harbourtown.
Nelson’s Dockyard, named after it’s military
founder, is one of Antigua’s prized historic sites.
