Resort Description

If you find the idea of staying in a resort that is within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom appealing, then the Contemporary Resort is for you! This massive A-frame tower with two Garden wings was one of the two original WDW resorts.  An interesting fact about the Contemporary is that, the rooms were prefabricated. They were built off-site and hoisted into place once the hotel was built.  The Grand Canyon Concourse is the name for the area of the interior of the 14 story concourse.  Here you will find the monorail station, shops, restaurants and a 90 foot high Mary Blair mural with a Southwestern theme.

The futuristic atmosphere of the Contemporary Resort is obvious when you see the Monorail glide through the A-frame structure.  Monorail access is only one of the many transportation options for the guests here.  Bus transportation is available to take guests to parks other than the Magic Kingdom, as well as to Downtown Disney Marketplace, and watercrafts carry guests to the Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, River Country and Discovery Island.
The spectacular views are yet another advantage of staying at the Contemporary.  Most guest rooms enjoy beautiful views of the Seven Seas Lagoon or Bay Lake.  And one of the best places to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks is from the California Grill Lounge on the 15th floor.  The lights in the restaurant are dimmed and the music is piped in to add to the ambiance.  The Electrical Water Pageant that glides across Bay Lake nightly can be viewed from the beach area of the Resort.  In 1991, a meeting and convention center was added to the Contemporary Resort. It features 90,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 42,300 square foot ballroom.

ROOMS: Both standard rooms and suites are offered at the Contemporary.   At 422 square feet, the guest rooms here are amongst the largest at WDW.   Guest rooms feature 2 queen size beds (or one king size bed) and a daybed, a table with 2 chairs, an armoire, a TV, a nightstand, an in-room safe, a large bathroom and a balcony/patio.  The patios on the first floor rooms in the Garden wings are not private, they are shared with your neighbors.  There are 25 suites with either park or lake views.  One and two bedroom suites with two queen size beds and sleeper sofas are available.  Suites include two-line speaker phones, an additional phone in the bath area, hair dryer, bathrobe and turndown service.

The eleven Concierge suites are found on the 12th and 14th floors.  Concierge services include:  making dinner reservations for you, answering questions, planning outings, a lounge that offers a continental breakfast, daily appetizers, an evening cheese bar, desserts, free beer, wine, soft drinks and bottled water, and turndown service (that includes a Mickey chocolate on your pillow).

TIP:  For rooms close to the food area, monorail and bus stop, choose the North Garden wing.  The South wing rooms are closer to the pool, and convention center.  The Tower rooms offer incredible views of Bay Lake, the Seven Seas Lagoon or the Magic Kingdom.  They are also closer to the monorail station, restaurants and shops.  Garden wing rooms can be quite a distance from the monorail.  However because of the proximity to the Grand Canyon Concourse, some Tower rooms may be noisy.

DINING:  One of the best views of the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks at Magic Kingdom, is from the California Grill on the 15th floor of the Contemporary.   The restaurant hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and the lounge, where cocktails, California wines, bottled beer, appetizers and desserts are served,  is open from noon to 1 a.m.   The restaurant menu changes according to the season and specializes in Californian-style cuisine.  The open kitchen often features pizza baked in wood-burning ovens, grilled meats, poultry, seafood, vegetarian dishes and sushi.  Priority Seating is recommended.

The Concourse Steakhouse is located in the 90 foot high atrium and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  At breakfast, bagels, fresh fruit, omelets and Mickey-shaped pancakes are served.  Breakfast is served from 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Lunch is served from 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and features California pizzas, fresh salads, and sandwiches.  As expected, grilled steaks, burgers, prime rib, as well as seafood, poultry and pasta dishes.  Dinner hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

One of the most popular spots for character meals is Chef Mickey's. Visit with Chef Mickey himself, Minnie, Pluto, Goofy, Chip and Dale here.  A breakfast buffet is served from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and features bagels, fresh fruit, omelets, Mickey-shaped pancakes, breads and other traditional breakfast dishes. Dinner hours are 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.  Peel-and-eat shrimp, prime rib, Parmesan Mashed Potatoes, chicken, seafood, pastas and a salad bar are offered at the dinner buffet.  Priority Seating is recommended.

The counter service restaurant, the Food and Fun Center, is located on the first floor, off the lobby, and is open from 6 a.m. to midnight.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here. Breakfast offerings include:  continental breakfast items, fruit, cereal, bacon and eggs.  For lunch or dinner, hot and cold sandwiches, salads, pizza hot dogs, hamburgers and desserts are available.  The "fun" part of the Center is a very large video arcade, one of the best on WDW property.  Full room service is available, 24 hours a day, at the Contemporary.

POOLS/RECREATION:  The large pool at the Contemporary Resort was recently renovated and enlarged with a 17 foot high curving slide added.  A second, smaller pool is round and gets progressively deeper as you move to the middle.  There are also two spas and a kiddie pool.  Swimming in Bay Lake is limited to a roped off wading area.  Bay Lake also provides a playground for many other kinds of water activities.  For a fee, guests may choose watermice, sailboats, pontoon boats, water-skiing, or parasailing as well.

Tennis buffs will enjoy the six clay tennis courts.  A Pro shop, tennis
lessons, drill lessons and clinics are available.  An Olympiad fitness
center is open daily, complete with Nautilus equipment, sauna, massages, whirlpool, and tanning booths.  Beach volleyball, basketball hoops, shuffleboard, a jogging path, a children's playground and the large video arcade offer lots of alternative recreational options.
