Why a Disney European Cruise Could Be the Best Vacation You Take in 2027

Disney Cruise Line’s European season is one of the most anticipated on the calendar. After a transatlantic repositioning cruise, one of the ships in the fleet typically sails from Florida to the Mediterranean for the season that runs from May through September each year.

In 2027, the ship taking on that season will be, for the first time, the beautiful Disney Wish. Here, I’ll share my own experience cruising Disney in Europe, what makes this season stand out, and why it might be the perfect fit for your next vacation.

The Best Part of Disney Cruises in Europe: Culture, History, and Food

I’ve had the good fortune of sailing two Disney cruises in Europe, both 7 nights and both aboard the beautiful Disney Fantasy.

The first was a Mediterranean cruise departing from Civitavecchia (near Rome), with stops in Naples and three Greek ports: Chania, Athens, and Mykonos. It remains one of my favorite Disney cruises out of more than 20 I’ve had the pleasure of taking. Arriving in Rome to kick off your vacation is a genuine treat: it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, packed with monuments that tell the story of its rich history, incredible food, and all the beauty Italy is famous for. Starting or ending your Disney cruise in a port that’s a bucket-list destination in its own right is a real privilege – you could easily spend several days, or even weeks, there and still not run out of things to discover.

That said, the departure or arrival port is just the beginning. The cruise itself carries you across the warm, calm waters of the Mediterranean on a journey full of beauty, history, and outstanding food culture. Spending the evening on board enjoying the entertainment and service Disney is known for, then waking up “as if by magic” in a port with completely different architecture and scenery, is a genuine luxury. There’s no need to worry about connections or hauling luggage from island to island: you arrive in the morning, enjoy lunch in Mykonos or a visit to the Acropolis in Athens, and head back to the comfort of your stateroom to keep the adventure going.

Sea days and evenings are perfect for enjoying the pools and the ship’s upscale restaurants, like Palo. Mediterranean itineraries really do offer the best of both worlds: the culture and history of the ports, paired with Disney’s signature service and entertainment.

My second European cruise was a completely different experience, but no less special: a sailing from Southampton to the Norwegian fjords. These itineraries typically run after the Mediterranean season wraps up.

Here too, the departure port offers a major perk, since Southampton is close to London. I used this trip to explore a city that quickly became one of my favorites, taking advantage of its enormous – arguably one of the largest and most diverse in the world – cultural scene: art exhibits, opera, musicals, concerts, you name it. London is a dream for art and culture lovers, and it’s also one of the most beautiful and diverse cities on earth.

Olden Norway

The cruise itself feels much closer to nature than the Mediterranean sailings. The Norwegian fjords are some of the most spectacular scenery I’ve ever seen; the scale of the mountains is genuinely breathtaking. Our cruise stopped in Norwegian towns like Olden, Ålesund, and Stavanger. The kayaking excursion I booked in Olden – through a Disney Port Adventure – surrounded by mountains with the ship anchored beside us, will stay with me as one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

A Range of Itineraries for Every Kind of Trip, Now Aboard the Disney Wish

The Disney Wish, which debuted in 2022, is the first ship in the new “Wish Class” and brought a number of firsts that set it apart from the rest of the fleet. It’s the first Disney cruise ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cleaner, more efficient propulsion technology. Onboard, the standout feature is the AquaMouse, Disney’s first themed water attraction at sea: a water coaster stretching more than 760 feet, complete with animated storytelling projected throughout the ride. Its three-story atrium, nicknamed the “castle of the seas,” greets guests with a grand staircase, towering columns, a sparkling chandelier, and a bronze Cinderella statue. On the dining side, it offers one-of-a-kind rotational dining experiences like Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure and Worlds of Marvel, plus immersive spaces themed to Star Wars and Pixar. Having this next-generation ship sail to Europe for the first time in 2027 makes the season even more special: guests won’t just be discovering new destinations, they’ll be doing it aboard one of the most innovative ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet.

As mentioned, for summer 2027 Disney Cruise Line is bringing the Disney Wish to European waters for the very first time. Sailings will depart from Southampton (England), Barcelona, and Civitavecchia (Rome) between May and September. This mix of home ports lets travelers choose between Northern Europe – with Norwegian fjords, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark – or the classic Mediterranean, with stops in Italy, Croatia, Greece, and Spain. The range of itineraries suits different kinds of travelers: from those looking for a quick cruise introduction to those wanting a deeper immersion across multiple countries on a single trip.

For shorter getaways, look at the 3- to 6-night cruises, like the 3-night Belgium sailing from Southampton (with a stop in Zeebrugge, gateway to Brussels) or the 6-night Western Europe cruise between Barcelona and Southampton, with stops in Gibraltar, Lisbon, and Vigo. These are ideal for travelers pairing the cruise with a land stay, or simply wanting to try the Disney cruise experience without committing a full week of vacation.

On the other end, the 7- and 8-night itineraries – like the Mediterranean sailing from Barcelona (Naples/Pompeii, Civitavecchia/Rome, Livorno/Florence-Pisa, and Genoa/Milan) or the Adriatic and Greece cruise from Rome (Corfu, Trieste/Venice, Zadar, and Dubrovnik) – allow for a much deeper immersion, covering historic cities and cultural heritage sites at every port, with fewer sea days and more real time exploring each destination.

Norwegian Fjords

This breadth of options – from the Scandinavian fjords to the Adriatic, with itineraries ranging from 3 to 10 nights – is what sets this European season on the Wish apart: it’s not a one-size-fits-all lineup, but an offering built for both travelers wanting a quick taste of Europe and those looking to map out a full cultural journey across several countries in a single booking.

Who Are These Cruises Best Suited For?

One of the biggest surprises I found when looking at the guest profile on European cruises is that they’re far more family-oriented than I expected. Because these sailings don’t visit Caribbean beaches or depart from a port near the theme parks, I assumed the crowd would skew toward adults or couples without young kids. That wasn’t the case at all.

The guest mix was practically identical to any other Disney cruise: families with young kids or teens, along with older couples without children.

I think European cruises are a great fit for families who want to explore these beautiful destinations without the hassle of arranging transportation between cities, booking hotels, and repacking bags for a classic “Euro trip.”

Mykonos Greece

Of course, if what you’re after is more of a resort-style, beach-relaxation vacation, a Caribbean cruise might be the better fit. But if you’re looking for the perfect balance of history, culture, great food, and beautiful cities – without giving up the service and entertainment Disney is known for – these cruises are a great match, no matter what your family looks like.
